Time for Frankie Coolin by Bill Granger with Bill Savage Monday, September 19, 2022

The September book club meeting featured a discussion of the novel Time for Frankie Coolin (1982) by Bill Granger (1941-2012), a Chicago author and journalist for the UPI Chicago bureau, the Chicago Tribune, and the Chicago Sun-Times. When his career in journalism ended with the dwindling newspaper business, Granger successfully published more than twenty novels, lived most of his life in Chicago in on South Side and was a nationally acclaimed author in the 80s.

The Club was honored to have Bill Savage, professor of American Literature at Northwestern University, as the discussant. Savage is the author of the foreword to the 2014 reprint and considers this novel Granger’s great and underrated work. Savage pointed out that the book is both a psychological thriller and a ’70s period piece that shines a surprisingly sympathetic light on the often-ignored stories of the people who lived, worked and died at the city’s margins in the midst of the period’s politically incorrect times.

The discussion was recorded and can be viewed here.
